The Most Personal Spec
No specification matters more to how a guitar feels than the neck profile. Two identical guitars with different necks can feel like completely different instruments.
50s Rounded vs 60s SlimTaper
The two most referenced Gibson profiles sit at opposite ends of the vintage spectrum. The 50s Rounded is thick and substantial, filling the hand with a rounded shoulder. The 60s SlimTaper is slim and fast, with a gentle taper that suits lead and technical playing.
How to Choose
If you play a lot of rhythm, have larger hands, or love vintage feel, the 50s Rounded is rewarding. If you play lead, switch positions often, or prefer speed, the 60s SlimTaper is the safer bet.
Beyond the Big Two
Modern Gibson necks often use asymmetrical profiles that adapt to the thumb in multiple positions. These are comfortable and ergonomic but less traditional in feel.
